Welcome to the club! ID/Icon contest?

Sun Dec 23, 2007, 11:21 AM
:music:Welcome to the Dream Theater Fanclub!:music:

:bulletred:Information
This is a fanclub for the American progressive metal band "Dream Theater." The band consists of members James LaBrie, John Petrucci, John Myung, Jordan Rudess, and Mike Portnoy. They are known for their technical proficiency and having very long songs. Okay, I made that last part up. But they ARE pretty amazing.

:bulletred:Contest? ID? Icon?
Our little DT fanclub is so sad and ID-less, and the icon is pretty lame, too.
So, what do you say about making a better one?
Only rule is, do not use copyrighted material. Your own photos/graphics are good, as are free-domain materials. :) You guys don't need me to tell you that, of course.

Let's set the date for sometime in June? Sound good?

Biographies and Discography

:bulletred:Member Biographies

:bulletblue:Vocalist: James LaBrie
Kevin James Labrie was born on May 5, 1963 in Penetanguishene, a town in Ontario, Canada. From a very young age, he had a great singing talent. He also played the drums. By the time he was 14, he was already a drummer in several bands, but he knew that his passion was for singing. At 21 he moved to Toronto, Canada, and began training with renowned vocal coach Rosemary Patricia Burns. He was the vocalist for several bands along the way, including a glam rock band called "Winter Rose." Then, he heard about the New York based band "Dream Theater" that was looking for a vocalist. He quickly sent them a tape and flew down, and was chosen over 200 others.
Along with Dream Theater, he also does solo works.

:bulletblue:Guitarist: John Petrucci
He grew up on Long Island, and began playing guitar at the age of 12. He was largely self-taught, as he tried to reach the levels of his 'idols.' ome early influences include Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads, Iron Maiden, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Yes, Rush etc. Metallica and Queensryche were added onto that list later on. But Petrucci was more of a technical player, and geared more towards fast and melodic playing. His musical education began with a great music theory class he took in high school. He also took some lessons at Berklee College of Music in Boston. At Berklee, he heard and joined Mike Portnoy's band, "Majesty" which went on to become "Dream Theater."

:bulletblue:Bassist: John Myung
Born in Chicago to Korean parents, Myung grew up in Kings Park, Long Island, New York. He played the violin from the age of five until he was asked to play electric bass in a local band when he was fifteen. He stuck with bass from then on, and after graduating from high school he enrolled at the Berklee College of Music, where he and high school friend John Petrucci (guitar) met future band mate Mike Portnoy (drums). The three of them formed the band Majesty with another friend from high school, keyboardist Kevin Moore, and vocalist Chris Collins. They would later be known as Dream Theater.

:bulletblue:Keyboardist: Jordan Rudess
In the 2nd grade, it was realized that Rudess had extraordinary talent on the piano. However, to the dismay of his parents, he enjoyed rock keyboards more than classical piano. In the 1980s, he played various projects, and was voted "Best New Talent" in the Keyboard Magazine readers' poll. Two bands invited him to join, DT being one of them. Rudess chose the other. Leter on, he encountered Dream Theater again, and became the keyboardist in 1999.
Fun fact: Rudess has perfect pitch.

:bulletblue:Drummer: Mike Portnoy
Mike Portnoy was born and raised in Long Beach, New York, on Long Island. His father worked as a DJ at a local radio station, helping Portnoy gain an appreciation for music at an early age through bands like Queen, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Yes and The Beatles. Although Portnoy taught himself how to play the drums he did take music theory classes in high school, and during that period he began playing in local bands Intruder, Rising Power and Inner Sanctum, the latter of which released an album. He left Inner Sanctum after being awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he met John Petrucci and John Myung, and formed a band called Majesty, that would later become Dream Theater.

Band Information And History

Mon May 28, 2007, 12:42 PM
:bulletred:Basic Information

Dream Theater is a progressive metal band formed by three students at the Berklee College of Music in 1985. In the 22 years since their inception, they have become one of the most commercially successful progressive bands since the height of progressive rock in the mid-1970s, despite being relatively unknown in mainstream rock circles. Their two highest selling albums are Images and Words (1992), which was awarded a gold record although it reached only #61 on the Billboard 200 charts; and Awake (1994) which reached #32 on the Billboard 200. Dream Theater has sold over two million albums in the U.S., and over six million albums and DVDs worldwide.[3]

The band is well known for the technical proficiency of its instrumentalists, who have won many awards from music instruction magazines. Dream Theater's members have collaborated with many other notable musicians.
