Vocalist: James LaBrie
Kevin James Labrie was born on May 5, 1963 in Penetanguishene, a town in Ontario, Canada. From a very young age, he had a great singing talent. He also played the drums. By the time he was 14, he was already a drummer in several bands, but he knew that his passion was for singing. At 21 he moved to Toronto, Canada, and began training with renowned vocal coach Rosemary Patricia Burns. He was the vocalist for several bands along the way, including a glam rock band called "Winter Rose." Then, he heard about the New York based band "Dream Theater" that was looking for a vocalist. He quickly sent them a tape and flew down, and was chosen over 200 others.
Along with Dream Theater, he also does solo works.

Guitarist: John Petrucci
He grew up on Long Island, and began playing guitar at the age of 12. He was largely self-taught, as he tried to reach the levels of his 'idols.' ome early influences include Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads, Iron Maiden, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Yes, Rush etc. Metallica and Queensryche were added onto that list later on. But Petrucci was more of a technical player, and geared more towards fast and melodic playing. His musical education began with a great music theory class he took in high school. He also took some lessons at Berklee College of Music in Boston. At Berklee, he heard and joined Mike Portnoy's band, "Majesty" which went on to become "Dream Theater."

Keyboardist: Jordan Rudess
In the 2nd grade, it was realized that Rudess had extraordinary talent on the piano. However, to the dismay of his parents, he enjoyed rock keyboards more than classical piano. In the 1980s, he played various projects, and was voted "Best New Talent" in the Keyboard Magazine readers' poll. Two bands invited him to join, DT being one of them. Rudess chose the other. Leter on, he encountered Dream Theater again, and became the keyboardist in 1999.
Fun fact: Rudess has perfect pitch.

Drummer: Mike Portnoy
Mike Portnoy was born and raised in Long Beach, New York, on Long Island. His father worked as a DJ at a local radio station, helping Portnoy gain an appreciation for music at an early age through bands like Queen, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Yes and The Beatles. Although Portnoy taught himself how to play the drums he did take music theory classes in high school, and during that period he began playing in local bands Intruder, Rising Power and Inner Sanctum, the latter of which released an album. He left Inner Sanctum after being awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he met John Petrucci and John Myung, and formed a band called Majesty, that would later become Dream Theater.
